The Cards hosted the Mount Airy Bears, losing both matches in a double-header that was a continuation of a rained out first match.

On Monday, the Bears swept the first set in the individuals matches 6-0. The coaches elected not to play a doubles round in the first match.

The Bears won 8-1 in the second match. They took five wins in individual play and took all three wins in doubles.

In singles, the Bears forfeited at the fourth seed spot after Bear Carley Vanhoy sprained her ankle and could not finish the set in the individual competition.

Bears Head Coach Scott Kniskern said she will rest out Wednesday’s match against Surry Central.

Hughes/Daniels take 8-1 win over Tickle/Hawks

Hagwood/Cheyenne Rhodes take 8-3 win over Mikayla Manuel/Gibson

East Surry Head Coach David Kidd said, “I was proud of how my girls handled a tough situation. They came out and still played tough even after a hard day of school. We hope to get back to winning when we travel to Atkins on Thursday.”

Kniskern said he was happy the Lady Bears play overall.

The Bears are tied with Bishop in the lead for the Northwest 1A conference. Their only two losses of the season have been to Bishop and Salisbury. They are 10-2.

Kniskern said he expects Hughes and Vanhoy, Barbour and Thomas, and Daniels and Jackson to qualify for the regionals. The conference tournament is scheduled for Oct. 8-9 and is how players qualify for regionals.

Good regional scores will qualify players for state playoff contention. Kniskerns said he also expects several of his players to make the state championship.
