Mount Airy honored its two volleyball seniors before sweeping Atkins 3-0.

The Lady Bears won 25-11, 25-11 and 25-8 with a strong night of serving.

Senior Jasmine Varney was 21/23 serving with seven aces.

Sarah Lankford went 13/14 with nine aces to go with her 32 assists. Charli Hiatt served 8/8 with four aces.

Charli also had a great night receiving the serve, according to Coach Chuck Moss. She didn’t have a single error, and all of her passes to the setter were on-target.

Middle hitter Samantha Kovach posted seven kills in nine chances. She also had six stuff blocks.

Senior Kathryn Beasley led the team with 10 kills, while Varney had seven.

“I couldn’t have asked for two more dynamic seniors to be the co-captains,” said Morris, in his first season at Mount Airy. “I appreciate the effort they put forth.”

Coming into the match, Varney had earned 105 points at the service line, posted 160 kills and made 180 digs.

She received serve 437 times and had a positive ratio 84 percent of the time, said Morris.

Beasley came in with 310 kills, ninth-highest among all players with stats kept online at MaxPreps, noted Morris. She made 903 swings, which was the third-most attempts.

Only Mount Airy and East Surry bother to keep stats on MaxPreps, but Beasley is tops in the Northwest rankings with 4.2 kills per set. She is second to East’s Sydney Mosley with 223 digs.

Morris said he is trying to go back through the previous three seasons and tally up how many kills Beasley has in her career because she probably has enough to pass the coveted 1,000-kill milestone.

On Monday, Mount Airy will host Walkertown in the first round of the Northwest Conference Tournament. East Surry will host Atkins. Both games start at 6 p.m.

For the semifinals and finals, Atkins is the host school.

On Tuesday, if East Surry wins, the Cards would play at 5 p.m. against either North Stokes or Bishop McGuinness. Mount Airy would follow against whichever team East doesn’t play.

Then the final comes on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
