WINSTON-SALEM — Surry Central stayed close with Carver for most of the first half before the home team pulled away for a 52-7 win.

The Eagles were just a score behind at 14-7 when the Yellow Jackets scored twice before halftime for a 27-7 lead.

The team did some good things on both sides of the ball, but Carver just has a lot of speed all over the field, said Coach Monty Southern.

Carver has two good wide receivers, and the quarterback scrambled around long enough to buy time for them to get open, said Southern.

The coach said the stadium had a “Super Bowl moment” less than 30 minutes before kickoff. The lights went out on the field and didn’t come back on until 7:20 p.m. Still, the game started on time at 7:30 p.m.

The Eagles only committed one penalty all night, and the offense held onto the ball really well, said Southern.

Carver scored twice to take a 14-0 lead.

In the second quarter, quarterback Alex Martin broke free for a long run of 65 or 70 yards down to the 1-yard line, the coach said. From there, Martin scored on a keeper to make it 14-7.

Carver scored again to go up 21-7, but Southern felt like the Eagles could move the ball again.

Unfortunately, a turnover gave the Yellow Jackets great field position, and Carver scored again before the half. That made it 27-7.

Southern said he was disappointed that Carver kept passing the ball with a big lead in the fourth quarter. The final two scores came on pass plays with less than six minutes to play.

The defense sacked Carver’s quarterback a couple of times, but when the pressure didn’t get there, the QB showed a strong and accurate arm, according to the coach.

Next Friday, the Eagles host South Stokes on Homecoming Night.
