WINSTON-SALEM — Mount Airy fell to North Stokes 3-1 in the semifinals of the Northwest Conference volleyball tournament.

The Lady Vikings won the first set 25-19, but the Lady Bears bounced back with a 25-18 set of their own.

The Vikings won a one-sided third set 25-13, but Mount Airy battled hard through the fourth set before the Vikings pulled out a 25-21 victory.

Mount Airy did some good things in the match, according to Coach Chuck Morris. The serving was accurate with only eight misses in four sets. The serve-receive was even better with just four errors.

Sarah Lankford (14/14) and Charli Hiatt (12/12) were perfect from the line, while Jasmine Varney was 14-16 and Abby Harold 12-14.

The girls played really competitively, but there were too many defensive errors, said Morris, especially on making digs.

North Stokes had a right-side hitter that was tough and the Bears couldn’t shut her down, he said.

“All in all we played well,” he said. The team showed plenty of heart all match long.

Beasley led the team with 13 kills, with Varney, Harold and Amy Kunkel with six each.

Samantha Kovach had five kills and 12 blocks, including several stuff blocks for points, noted the coach.

Lankford handed out 32 assists.
