WINSTON-SALEM — Awards were given at the close of Wednesdays Northwest 1 A volleyball conference tournament at Atkins High School.

East Surry was recognized for winning the tournament championship and North Stokes for winning the conference title.

The tournaments Most Outstanding Tournament Player was Olivia Sheets of East Surry.

Cardinal Head Coach Caleb Gilley said Sheets contributed two nights of more than 30 assists and seven kills in conference tournament play. “I was not surprise at all, Olivia won,” said Gilley.

Players who made the all-conference team for East Surry were Sydney Mosley, Gabi Jessup, Kacie Markle.

Gilley said, “Mosley is the best libero in this area, her stats are unbelievable as a passer. She is a big reason why we are 21-6. Jessup has been on varsity since a sophomore and is a great blocker. She is the smartest hitter, she finds every hole available. Markle is more than a power-hitter, she is smart and does a good job of reading defense. Her defense has helped us tremendously.”

Caleb Gilley added, “Jesse Barr did not get an award but she does a great job. Defensively, she is one to get the serve in and does a great job passing. She is a huge asset for us.”

Honorable mention player for Cards were Olivia Sheets, Jesse Marion.

Gilley said, “Marion is a very good blocker and hits well around, she extended my expectation of her.”

All tournament players were Cheyenne Kota, Kristel Hicinbothem, Kathryn Beasley, Jessica Brandewie, Sabrina Dodson, Lauren Chestnut.

Gilley said both Kota and Hicinbothem put in great play for the team.

Mount Airy put two on the all conference team, Kathryn Beasley and Sarah Lankford.

Bears coach Chuck Morris said, “Kathyrn should have been the player of the year in the conference. To me, she is the most athletic in the conference, has a great hop … and hit roll shots. Most teams have to be prepared to play Kathryn when they play us.”

Beasley led in number of kills per set. “Kat demands from the team to play at an intense level, she is not overbearing but demands they play at that level All players look up to her effort.”
