Mount Airy exploded for 51 first-half points in a 64-0 whipping of Atkins Friday night.

The Granite Bears went 3-3 in nonconference play, but are determined to continue their dominance in league play.

In wins over Bishop McGuinness and Atkins, the Bears have a combined score of 106-7.

The Bears didn’t complete a pass, feeling comfortable keeping the ball on the ground.

The game mostly was played on Atkins’ side of the 50, so the Bears only had 20 carries for 123 yards — a healthy 6.2 yards per carry average.

Tailback Shay Wilson had four touchdowns, and Devontae Dobson had two more.

Isiah Simmons returned a kickoff for a touchdown and scored again off an interception return.

The Bears took the Camels down in the end zone for a safety in the second quarter.

Off the ensuing free kick, Caleb Horton caught the ball on his own 45-yard line and went 55 yards to the end zone.

The Bears improved to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in the new Northwest Conference. East Surry (7-1) also is 2-0 in the league.

Next up for Mount Airy is a trip to Walkertown to face the Wolfpack (7-1, 1-1). Walkertown’s only defeat was to East Surry 28-21.

In the most recent A.P. coaches poll, East Surry was ranked sixth in 1A and Walkertown 10th.

On Friday, the Cardinals travel to winless North Stokes (0-8, 0-2). Bishop (4-4, 0-2) hosts Atkins (3-4, 1-1).
