DENVER — The Surry Runnin’ Patriots girls basketball team blew out perennial rival Asheville 55-33 on Friday night.
The Lady Trailblazers always have a tough team, and the Lady Patriots squeaked by them in the semifinals last year.
Asheville didn’t lose anybody from last season, noted Coach Todd Hill.
However, Surry jumped all over the Blazers in the first quarter for a 19-2 lead.
Hill said his players applied tight defensive pressure and ran the fast break well off of turnovers.
Asheville has good pressure defense, too, but Surry had only nine turnovers as a team, he said.
Sydney Bedsaul led the team with six assists and committed just one turnover. She also led the team in scoring with 20 and was second in rebounding with seven.
Kaylee Parris scored 12 and led the team with five steals.
Jessica Boyd nearly had a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds.
Hill said he switched up defenses several times to keep Asheville off-balance.
On Monday, the Patriots travel to Winston-Salem to play Salem Baptist.
