RONDA — Zach Wilmoth scored a game-high 25 points and added 11 rebounds as Surry Central defeated East Wilkes 68-47 on Friday night in the season opener.
The Eagles (1-0) led 17-12 after the first quarter and took a 41-26 lead to the break.
“It was a good first game for us,” Coach Ken Eiswald of Surry Central said. “We wanted to go out and work hard on defense, pressure the ball, get transition buckets. We wanted to be aggressive. We took a few too many perimeter shots, but the effort was there. It was a great way to start out, to go win a game on the road.”
Jake Wilmoth added nine points for the Eagles. Cole Stewart scored eight and Kirk Needham chipped in with seven. Rounding out the scoring was Brett Mosley (six points), Samuel Harris (six points), Jeremy Patterson (five points) and Weston Mosley (two points).
Surry Central is scheduled to host Mount Airy on Tuesday night.
Eiswald said his team is much deeper this season — with nine guys contributing against East Wilkes.
“Zach Wilmoth played real well, and we were able to spread it around and have different guys making plays,” Eiswald said. All nine guys contributed and played well. We made a lot of extra passes tonight. Guys weren’t trying to do too much. We missed some shots we’ll hit later on, but I was very pleased with the way we moved the ball around.”
