WALNUT COVE — East Surry’s girls basketball team picked up a victory over South Stokes on Tuesday night in the season opener.
Gabi Jessup scored all 13 of her points in the second half for the Cardinals (1-0). Sydney Mosley chipped in with 12 points despite foul trouble for East, which trailed 26-23 at halftime.
South Stokes was led by Kelly Mounce, who had a game-high 23 points. Mounce scored 14 of the Sauras’ 16 second-quarter points against the Cards’ zone defense. When East went back to a man-to-man defense, Laken Bowman was able to slow down the Sauras’ leading scorer. East head coach Keith Gunter said Kacie Markle hit a key 3-pointer that helped move 6-foot-2 Kelsey Grantham of South Stokes away from the basket.
East won despite shooting just 6 of 20 at the foul line.
“You get a close one out of the way. Hopefully that’s a big weight off their shoulders,” Gunter said. “Now that the anticipation of the first game is out of the way, they can relax, and settle down.”
The Cardinals will host Elkin on Friday night.
