PILOT MOUNTAIN — Mount Airy was locked in a tight game late in the fourth quarter against Elkin on Saturday at the Thanksgiving Invitational.
Then Mikayla Seivers made two huge plays to spark the Lady Bears to a 52-45 win.
After the Lady Elks pulled to within 45-43, Seivers found Ayano Shelton for a fast-break layup and then had a steal and layup to put the Bears ahead by six points with 1:08 left.
“Those were two big plays,” Coach Howard Mayo said. “(Elkin) had 25 turnovers so obviously we are doing some things well. There are still some things we’d like to work on.”
Shelton had a team-high 11 points for the Bears. Kathryn Beasley also hit double figures with 10 points to go with six rebounds. Seivers finished with six points and five assists.
Mount Airy struggled offensively for much of the game — scoring just 33 points through the first three quarter. The Bears had a ton of shots in close that didn’t go down.
“We missed point blank layups,” Mayo said. “Defensively our rotations were slow and we didn’t box out well.”
Miracle Walters led all scorers with 14 for the Elks, who got off to a slow start, trailing 14-6 after the first quarter. The Bears’ offensive struggles helped Elkin get back in the game. The Elks led 34-33 going into the fourth.
Mount Airy (3-0) went 2-0 in the Thanksgiving Invitational, beating Forbush on Friday. The Bears were 6 of 11 at the free-throw line.
“We closed out two ball games well,” Mayo said. “We made foul shots when we needed to and we made layups when we needed to.”
The Bears host Elkin on Tuesday night.
