KING — East Surry held a one-point lead in the closing seconds, but West Stokes’ Grayson Cobb made a basket with two seconds left to win the game 46-45.

The Wildcats came into the game at 4-4 while the Cardinals were 9-2. Still, Coach Jason Anderson knew his team was in for a fight.

Not only is West Stokes well coached, the players are always physical and aggressive, he noted. At the same time, Anderson knew his team couldn’t help but be a little winded after wins over South Stokes and North Surry on consecutive days.

Defensively, the team did pretty well considering it was the third game in three nights, he said.

Offensively, the Cards struggled mightily to score around the basket, but a lot of the credit for that has to go to West Stokes’ defense, he said.

East Surry actually shot better from long range than on two-point shots (33 percent to 27 percent).

West Stokes led 14-6 after the first quarter.

“They played a matchup zone, and we just settled for shots,” he said. “We didn’t execute our offense well.”

In the second quarter, the Cards did a better job of running their plays and outscored West 17-9 to tie the game 23-all at the break.

The Cards fell back into the same trap of settling for shots in the third quarter, but kept it even at 32-32 at the end of the period, according to the coach.

Despite all the offensive struggles, the Cards did take a lead into the closing seconds, but Cobb played well all game and finished with 16 points, Anderson said.

Grayson Cobb 16 and hit the shot to put them ahead at the end with 1.8 left.

Spencer Hensley scored 11 points, Caustin Beckner seven,Keshawn Rawleigh and Kameron Wall four each and Hampton Cook two.

For East Surry, Scott Meredith led with 23 points, Carson Long had nine, Jacob Bowman four and Jack Edwards two. Seth Brim led the team with eight rebounds to go with his six points.

The Cards don’t play against until after the holiday.
