Surry Central’s Zach Wilmoth is poised to move up a notch in the school’s record books in tonight’s game at North Surry.

Last week, Wilmoth was fifth in career scoring for the Golden Eagles and moved up to fourth place by passing second cousin Broz Wilmoth, who had 1,115 points in his varsity career.

With just eight points tonight, Wilmoth will climb into third place, going over Matt Richardson, the current girls soccer coach and boys assistant soccer coach who scored 1,131 points.

After that, the next rung on the ladder is more than 120 points higher.

Chad Casstevens was the 2002 1A player of the year and scored 1,254 points in his career.

The remarkable thing for Chad is that he wasn’t a regular on the varsity team until his junior year, noted current assistant coach Jeff Edmonds. Chad was on the JV team as a sophomore and only moved up to the varsity bench for a few games.

With 1,124 points, Zach is 130 points behind Casstevens for second place.

Considering the 6-foot-5 senior is averaging 18.1 points right now, Zach should reach that goal easily with 10 games left in the regular season, then the Western Piedmont Conference Tournament after that.

Second place is the best that Zach can hope for at this point as cousin Ethan Wilmoth sits far ahead in first place with 1,730 points. Even if Zach Wilmoth averaged 30 points a game the rest of the season and Central advanced all the way to the state title game, the Eagles wouldn’t play enough games to reach Ethan’s mark.

Despite always being the tallest player on the Eagles’ roster, Zach Wilmoth has never been at home on the low block.

Forced to play center most of his career, he has learned to be effective around the basket, but looks much happier slashing into the paint.

“Zach has been one of the most coachable kids we’ve had,” said Coach Ken Eiswald. “He played the post as a skinny freshman and got knocked around a lot, but never questioned what he was asked to do.”

This season, with freshman Dante Hanner helping take some of the low-post duties off his shoulders, Zach has moved to a forward spot. He is second on the team in three-point attempts and his drives to the basket have allowed him to shoot more than twice as many free throws as the next closest teammate (96 attempts).

“He has grown steadily as a leader on the floor,” Eiswald said of Zach. “He is a dream kid to coach.”

Zach has aspirations to play in college and has received a couple of offers already, noted the coach. “I’m thrilled for him that he’s reached this level.”

While it’s great that Zach gets these honors, it would be better if they came with some wins, joked Eiswald. Both the game where he broke 1,000 points and Friday’s game where he moved into fourth place were losses for the team.

Even though the team came up a little short last week, Eiswald said that the Eagles are improving. He believes the team is turning the corner and could start playing some great basketball to finish the season.

Against North Surry, Wilmoth and Hanner will go against North Surry’s inside duo of Ryan March and Nathan Fletcher. Those matchups could go a long way toward determining the outcome of the game.
