KING — The North Surry Lady Greyhounds defeated West Stokes 58-45 in the Western Piedmont 2A Conference tournament semifinals on Wednesday night.
The Greyhounds raced to an 18-3 lead after the first quarter before the Wildcats trimmed the deficit to 28-22 at halftime. North went on a 13-0 run to start the game.
West was within striking distance heading into the fourth, before North pulled away.
Junior guard Morgan Hawks led all scorers with 15 points for the Greyhounds (17-6), who will take on the Surry Central-South Stokes winner in the tournament finals. The Sauras and Eagles face off today at 6 p.m. at West Stokes High School. The finals are scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m., also at West Stokes.
Freshman guard Maggie Hawks scored 11 points and Erin March also hit double-figures with 10 for the Greyhounds, who have won eight in a row and 12 of their last 13 games.
Taylor McKinney paced the Wildcats (11-13) with 13 points. North took both regular-season games against West this season.
Looking ahead to potential tournament championship matchups, the Greyhounds split two games with the Eagles, winning 53-36 on Feb. 7 and falling 46-43 on Dec. 17, the last time North lost a game. The Greyhounds swept the Sauras, winning by double figures in both contests.
Also on Wednesday night, West Stokes’ boys team knocked South Stokes out of the conference tournament, winning 60-47. The Wildcats will go up against tonight’s Carver/Forbush winner on Friday night at home in the tournament final.
