Mount Airy advanced to the second round of the state 1A soccer playoffs by beating North Stokes 7-2 at home.

The Lady Bears (11-9-2) avenged a 1-0 loss to the Lady Vikings (5-9-1) on the road last week.

The Bears will travel to Monroe Saturday to face Union Academy (17-2-2), which beat winless Albemarle (0-17) 9-0.

For most of the game, the ball stayed between midfield and North’s 18-yard box as the Bears kept the pressure on.

Jaden Brinkley put the Bears on the board first a few minutes into the first half. Then Kathryn Beasley scored with 28 minutes left to make it 2-0.

North’s Carson Bollman scored with 14:32 left in the half to cut the lead to 2-1. Bollman, a junior, scored both Viking goals.

With 6:54 left in the half, the Bears’ Marissa Petri scored for a 3-1 lead.

Then just 49 seconds later, the Vikings’ Bailey Bollman streaked back toward her keeper to help on defense and accidentally knocked the ball into the Viking’s own goal.

The 4-1 margin would last through halftime, then Brinkley scored her second goal two minutes into the second half on a long, high ball from the left side.

With 31:41 left, Petri took a free kick and floated it into the 18-yard box. Kimberly Lachino headed the ball past the keeper to make it 6-1.

Carson Bollman scored her second goal with 10:15 left.

Mount Airy’s Carly Clark finished off the scoring for the final five-goal margin.
