You Said It…

You Said It is a periodic feature of The Mount Airy News, where we share comments we’ve received on Facebook, via Twitter, or on our website, mtairynews.com, on articles and opinion pieces we’ve published. The comments are reproduced verbatim.

In response to an article by staff writer Tom Joyce, in which he reported the Mount Airy Board of Commissioners had voted to approve funding for the “whittler’s wall” project in downtown Mount Airy, we received these comments on our website, mtairynews.com:

David Bradley: Brad Spencer is an incredible artist. The sculpt will be yet another feather in the cap of Mount Airy. Great job!

Undercover Angel: true

moreen richards: Is this the same David Bradley who was head of the Chamber Commerce here some years ago then left for the same type job in a larger town? If so, want to bet his town has some of this stuff?

I looked on line and found that these figures are really made by computer controlled machines and not by hand at all.

This Spencer guy must have some real pull in Raleigh to get grant money to pay him. He’s from Reidsville and one of the top guys in state legislature is from there also. Is there a connection?

moreen richards: And another thing is $31,000 to “rehabilitate” the brick wall??? Counting the $140,000 or so spent on the “mini-park” plus the $105,000 for this brick stuff, that’s almost a quarter Million worth of improvements that benefit the owner of the pet store more than us taxpayers.

Vicki Putman: Wow, so they can get grants for more art, that will not even be benefiting a local artist, but can’t get a grant to open a rehab program for the thousands of addicts in this county or a place for homeless to get inside on these freezing nights or hot meals for them. SMH. Small towns.

cheryl the deplorable: Flip Rees? Seriously?

moreen richards: You can tell by comments I don’t think much of this project but since it’s going to be done anyway I do think Flip Rees should be included. He did a lot to keep main street alive.

And we received these comment on our Facebook page:

Keith Jarrell: Nice waste of money if it’s not local artist doing the job. Be smart, keep the money in the county/city. Then again it’s mount airy politics to do the dumbest things possible.

Jeanie Shelton: Need to hire local

Scott Sutton: That’s my only issue. We have a lot of talent in Surry Co.

Michelle Reese: No Andy Griffith???

Keith Jarrell: Thank God.

Michelle Reese: Nooooo!!! Shame on you, Keith Jarrell! (JK) I love Andy…but then again I don’t live in Mount Airy and I have yet to visit…but still…No Andy???

In response to a story by Tom Joyce that Carroll County, Virginia, maybe purchase water from Mount Airy for use in the Cana, Virginia, community, we received this comment on Facebook:

Keith Jarrell: Us in the city limits better get a lower price for water if the city is going to make money off of a surplus.
