WINSTON-SALEM — Four area athletes placed in the top four of their events at the state 1A/2A/3A indoor track championship Saturday.
North Stokes and West Wilkes took home a first places at the JDL Indoor Fast Track, while Wilkes Central and Winston-Salem Prep had two high finishes as well.
Tess Rogers, North Stokes, won first place in the pole vault. Last year in outdoor track, she won the Northwest Conference title in both pole vault and 300-meter hurdles. On Saturday, she reached 10’06” in the vault, the best mark by 6 inches.
Makayla Roten, West Wilkes, won first place in the high jump with a mark of 5’06”. She also tied for second in the pole vault with a best of 10 feet.
Laney Browder, Wilkes Central, finished second in the 1,000 meters. She ran 3:06.25, two seconds ahead of third place and less than five seconds behind the leader.
On the boys’ side, Winston-Salem Prep’s Sterling Jones finished fourth in the 55-meter hurdles. Jones was just two-hundredths of a second out of third place.
