A Mount Airy man apparently was looking to rob a woman at a city ATM location using a stun gun — but instead ended up with a broken leg and an arrest on a felony charge.
Amy Scott Balthis of Pilot Mountain is thought to have caused that injury when driving off in an attempt to get away from the suspect during the Monday night incident, according to Mount Airy Police Department reports.
It occurred at an ATM station in the parking lot of Wells Fargo Bank at 554 N. Main St.
Officers who responded soon after found Victor Charlie Ceasar at the scene with a broken leg. Ceasar, 44, of 611 S. South St., has been charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon and was confined in the Surry County Jail under a $25,000 secured bond.
The attempted robbery occurred shortly before 10 p.m. Monday as Balthis, driving a 2000 Toyota Avalon passenger car, arrived at Wells Fargo and was sitting inside the car preparing for a transaction at the ATM. She is associated with Head to Toe, a business on West Lebanon Street.
Police say the victim was approached by the suspect, who was wearing a bandanna over his nose and mouth. She advised that he attempted to gain entry to the car while holding the stun gun. Balthis, in an effort to flee from the suspect, drove away and caused his injury. She was not hurt.
Also found at the scene were the bandanna and stun gun, investigators say.
Ceasar was transported by the Surry County EMS to Northern Hospital of Surry County, where he was treated for the broken leg and released into the custody of officers. He then was transported to the police station to be processed and charged, before being incarcerated in Dobson.
The suspect is facing a Dec. 5 appearance in Surry District Court.
