East Surry Cardinal varsity girls kicked off the AES Thanksgiving Classic against the Forbush Falcons yesterday and won beat the Falcons by a score of 62-42.
The tournament was designed for coaches and teams to get a good estimation of where teams are before regular conference season play starts.
Cardinals Head Coach Keith Gunter said he was pleased with the victory but wanted the team to get better defensively and execute fully with follow through on offensive plays.
“We knew what we needed to do, they were asked to get a lead and handled the ball pretty well.” However, he is still looking for the team to perform better, especially at half-court offense and defense, he said.
Gunter said he was impressed by the team effort in assists. They recorded 17 total, he said.
The Cardinals were 22 for 28 in free throws and “that was great,” said Gunter.
Gabi Jessup scored the high of four assists, while Emma Slater, Sydney Moseley , Kacie Markle and Keri Fulp had three each.
The offensive scoring breakdown follows: Keri Fulp shot the high of 20 points; Sydney Moseley scored eight; Sydney Marion shot eight; Gabi Jessup scored eight; Emma Slater scored six; Lauren Thompson scored five; Kacie Markle scored four; and Laken Bowman sank three.
Finally, in an overall summary of the game, the Cardinals scored 17 points in both the first and second quarter. The Cardinals had scored 34 points total and Falcons 21 total by half-time. In the third quarter, the East Surry Cards scored 12 points, only one point more than the Falcons. The Cardinals scored 16 points total in the fourth and the Falcons made 12.
