Local authorities are awaiting the results of further testing on samples from a preliminary autopsy performed Monday at Baptist Medical Center in connection with the death of a five-month old infant on Nov. 16.

According to Surry County Sheriff’s Department Detective Lt. David Hamlin, the investigation into the baby’s death is still ongoing pending further analysis of autopsy results from another laboratory.

Hamlin said Mount Airy native Jimmy Noisey had identified himself as the infant’s father and reported to other news sources preliminary results of the autopsy indicated burns and trauma. Hamlin said authorities have received no word from the hospital as yet.

Sheriff Graham Atkinson previously reported Billie Jo Floyd, 30 of 346 Austin Drive and Justin Wayne Barker, 32 of 456 Poteat road had been charged with second degree murder in the death of Floyd’s child. Hamlin was unable to provide any information about custody arrangements of the child. He did say a search of records indicated no previous incidents at the residence.

Floyd and Barker remain behind bars under bond of $1 million each under what authorities have termed suspicious circumstances. According to Atkinson county emergency responders were called to Barker’s Poteat Road residence to respond to a report of an infant suffering from cardiac arrest.

Sheriff’s department officers were dispatched to the scene at the same time and arrived to find responders administering CPR. The infant girl was pronounced dead at Northern Hospital in Mount Airy.

Atkinson said injuries on the baby’s body raised concerns and after further investigation the couple was charged.

Debbie Campbell, who characterized herself as a friend of Noisey and the family, is coordinating a fund raising effort to pay funeral expenses for the infant. Campbell said Noisey is not employed and is financially unable to pay funeral costs for the child.

Campbell has requested donations be sent to Moody’s Funeral Home, 206 West Pine Street, Mount Airy in care of J.W. Noisey.
