According to a Carroll County Sheriff Warren Manning on the scene, a tornado touched down around 10 p.m. Monday during an issued tornado warning for that area.
The Kangaroo gas station on U.S. 52 was missing half of its roof, and the awning had partially collapsed. There were trees down in the area as well.
People were at the gas station when the incident occurred. No one was injured, according to Manning, although Cana Rescue Squad transported one person to Northern Hospital of Surry County for observation.
A spokeswoman with the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, which is responsible for Carroll as well as Surry County weather, said they also were receiving reports of the tornado touchdown. She said weather officials will decide in the morning if they will travel to Carroll County to confirm the touchdown.
A tornado watch remains in effect for Carroll, Surry and other surrounding counties until 4 a.m. Tuesday.
In addition, the area is under a flash flood warning until 4:15 a.m.
