BURTON
ELKIN — Mr. Stephen Matthew “Steve” Burton entered the portals of Heaven on Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital, while surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Surry County on April 22, 1952, to the late Matthew Martin and Annie Lee Hayes Burton. Mr. Burton was employed as a correctional officer for the Department of Public Safety and a dedicated member of Union Cross Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and adult Sunday school teacher. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 41 years, Mildred Payne Burton of the home; a daughter, Stephanie Welch and fiancé, Irvin Reynolds, of Mount Airy; his beloved granddaughter, Kendall Welch of Mount Airy; a grandson, Dalton Reynolds, also of Mount Airy; a brother and sister-in-law, the Rev. Tim and Cynthia Burton of Elkin; his mother-in-law, Gladiona Payne of Elkin; and a sister-in-law, Audrey and her husband Dennis Sink of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012, at Union Cross Baptist Church by the Rev. Bill Faw and Pastor Darrell Hall with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Moody-Davis Funeral Home, where his body will remain until time to be carried to the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service.
