The Bears’ Triston Mabry settles over his opponent and eventually gets a pin against Bassett at 152 lbs.
Mount Airy got off to quick starts in both wrestling matches to defeat Bassett and West Davidson at home Thursday.
The Granite Bears started off 18-0 against Bassett, then led West Davidson 30-0.
The two wins put Mount Airy at 19-9 on the season. That equals last year’s win total (19-16), noted Coach Steve Braune.
The Bears were set to face Bassett on Nov. 28, but that was postponed, so the team took on the Bengals before Thursday’s regularly scheduled match with West Davidson.
Alex Howard (106) and Colton McMillian (120) earned pins against Bassett, while Daniel Sechrist (113), Kenyon Smith (132) and Cameron Pack (138) got forfeits. That gave the Bears 30 points, while only giving up a technical fall at 126 with Jackson Blizzard.
Shay Wilson (145), Triston Mabry (152) and Dallas Smith (160) then got pins, and Landon Mumford got an injury forfeit when Darian Dillard was unable to continue at 170.
That put the score at 54-5, and the Bears cruised to a 66-17 win.
Austin Branch was pinned at 182, and the Bears gave up a forfeit at 195. Braune said the team has two guys at that weight, but one is sick and one is injured.
Zaquan Dobson had a second-period pin at 220, and Brian Bennett received a forfeit at heavyweight.
Against West Davidson, the match started at 120 lbs.
McMillian earned a second-period pin. Then Blizzard pinned his man in 59 seconds.
Smith did even better, getting his guy in only 18 seconds. Pack got a fall with just three seconds left in the first period.
When Wilson pinned his opponent in 43 seconds, that made five straight falls for a 30-0 lead.
The next two weights were West Davidson’s best wrestlers. Shane Hemmings was 15-2 at 152, and Justin Smith 14-2 at 160.
Mabry pulled out a close 6-4 decision against Hemmings, ranked eighth in the state for 2A schools.
Justin Smith won the Blackhawk Invitational with a 13-1 decision over Dallas Smith. Justin won 9-0 Thursday, but Dallas again avoided getting pinned, noted Braune.
At 170, Mumford gave up nine points on three takedowns and some back time, but then rallied to seemingly force overtime, according to the coach.
There looked to be an escape and then a takedown, good for three points. However, the ruling was that Landon scored a reversal, which is only good for two points, and the match ended 14-13.
At this point, the Bears led 33-7, Braune noted.
Branch lost a 9-0 decision at 182. Then after a swap of forfeits, Bennett pinned Jacob Smith in 53 seconds.
Howard lost a major decision 13-5, and Sechrist was pinned in the first, making the final score 45-27.
Mount Airy and Surry Central will travel to South Stokes this Saturday for the Rick Williams Duals.
