Mount Airy’s boys team won against the Bishop McGuinness Villians on home turf Friday by a score of 55-45. Austin Taylor led in scoring with 21 points and six steals.
Austin Taylor and Carson Mounce pounced together in the opening quarter, Taylor putting in 7 and Mounce scoring 6 points.
Mount Airy Bears head coach Levi Goins said the Bears came out with with energy and he called Darius Gwyn the player of the game. Goins said his pressure on the Villians created offensive opportunities repeatedly for the Bears. Darius Gwyn also had 6 rebounds, Goins said.
Gwyn was guarding Bishop’s Kevin Weckworth, who is typically the Villian’s top scorer, Goins said. Weckworth only had seven points Friday.
“His pressure changed the game dynamic and that created the majority of our offense in the first half, so I would call Darius Gwyn the player of the game.”
The team showed toughness all the way through. Austin Taylor in the first quarter got a steal then tripped, got back up and ran down the court to get the ball. Taylor then made a layup in a top play of the game, Goins said.
At halftime the score was Bears 31-24. Goins said the Villians made a run late in second quarter, due to some poor decision-making on the Bears offensive end.
“This area is where our team is learning to grow, but our defensive pressure is great and we are growing, maturing and making better decisions,” Goins said.
Goins said the Bears started strong in the third quarter and had a small lapse. They ended the quarter up by nine and continued with pressure plays and kept momentum going into the fourth with Gwyn still hard at work, said Goins.
In the fourth quarter, Goins said “We had good production from Sean Best and Benji Hicks, who made great passes to Best.” Goins said Best played well in both the third and fourth quarter.
In Bear statistics against the Villians, Carson Mounce scored 10 points and had five rebounds; Caleb Horton had 6 points, Austin Taylor had 21 points and six steals, Khaileel Dailey had six points and seven rebounds and Dylan Gallimore had four points. Darius Gwyn had four points, 6 rebounds and two charges; and Sean Best had four points and four rebounds.
The Bears are now 8-5 overall and play East Surry at home on Tuesday.
