Mount Airy relied on an accurate service game to keep Winston-Salem Prep on the defensive in Monday’s match.
The Lady Bears won all three sets by a combined 75-22, with many of the points coming from serves by junior Dana Brown and senior Jenna Clement.
Brown gave the Bears the first five points in the first game. Then the Lady Phoenix battled back to 8-4 before Mount Airy got the ball back. Then Clement ran off 13 straight points; by the time Prep served again, the score was 22-5.
The Bears then took the last three points for the win.
In the second game, Prep served, but the Bears earned the point and let Brown serve again. She earned six straight points to make it 7-0. Prep would make the score more respectable the rest of the way, losing 25-7.
In the third frame, Prep played its best stretch. Mount Airy jumped out to an 8-3 lead, but the Phoenix closed to 9-7.
Mount Airy ran off four straight points, prompting a timeout at 13-7, but the Bears would continue on for a 25-10 win.
For the Bears, Clement, Lindsey Payne, Kristin Collins and Taylor Dollyhigh controlled the front line, while Brown, Alexis Allen and libero Olivia Smith defended the back.
The Bears have another home date Wednesday against North Wilkes. Next week, the Bears have another three home matches, including two against conference opponents.
