Russell and Kay McLachlan relax at the Sobotta Manor Thursday afternoon. They are came to Mount Airy from Virgina Beach, Va. to celebrate a romantic Valentine’s Day.
Florists, jewelers and bed and breakfasts are all scrambling to keep up with the demand for services that Valentine’s Day brings with it.
Joe Bowman, owner of Cana/Mount Airy Florist, said that while the economy has slowed business a little, Valentine’s Day is proving to be good for business.
“Business seems to be par, which is about normal. With the economy we have a little less business than normal but have still have a few more days to go,” Bowman said Wednesday.
Dawn Lawson, owner of Creative Designs Flowers & Gifts said Valentine’s business is busy as usual.
“It’s not overwhelming — but wait until about 11 o’clock Thursday night, then that’s when things get really busy,” Lawson said.
She said, as always, red roses are ordered the most this time of year. She said Thursday afternoon that orders were still pouring in.
“Men have always waited to the last minute to order,” she said.
In addition to men buying roses for their sweethearts, Lawson said, some people also order flowers for their mothers, daughters, friends and even for men.
Steve Scott, owner of Airmont Florist & Gift Shop said Valentine’s Day never fails to surprise him. This year, the florist has already stopped taking orders for Valentine’s Day.
“We pretty much sell out. When it comes to love, it is the one time people can just splurge. It’s definitely a boon for local business. We are very fortunate,” Scott said.
He said that although his Valentine’s business comes predominately from men, some women order people flowers for the men in their lives.
“Some people think men don’t flowers and that’s not necessarily true,” Scott reported.
Brandt Scholz, owner of B & L Custom Jewelers, said he has sold quite a few diamond engagement rings preceding Valentine’s Day.
“A lot of people are going to pop the question on Valentine’s Day,” Scholz said.
He said while his business was a little slower at Christmas than usual, things have really picked up for Valentine’s Day.
“What I am finding out is that there were some wives and girlfriends that weren’t very happy with what they didn’t get for Christmas when it comes to jewelry, so that’s why business has been so good the last few days,” Scholz said.
Machelle McCann, co-owner of Infinity Day Spa, located on Rawley Avenue, said her business has picked up because of Valentine’s Day.
“We are almost all booked up. We’ve had a lot of people buying gift certificates for manicures, pedicures, facials and massages. So far, it’s mostly men coming in to buy for their wives and girlfriends,” McCann said.
Jennifer Allen, owner of Pilot Knob Cabins in Pilot Mountain, said she is booked solid because of the holiday.
“We don’t have anything open until Tuesday. We’ve been turning away 50 to 75 requests for cabins a day. I’ve just quit answering the phone because it’s just been crazy,” Allen said. The bed and breakfast is already booked for next weekend as well.
Robin Hester, owner of the Sobotta Manor Bed & Breakfast, said she is booked for Valentine’s weekend.
“All the love birds are flocking to Mount Airy. Love is in the air,” Hester said.
She said one couple came from Virginia Beach to stay at her inn for Valentine’s weekend. One of her guests, Russell McLachlan said, “North Carolina is for lovers, not Virginia.”
Hester said her guests chose to come to Mount Airy to celebrate Valentine’s Day because it’s the perfect place to relax.
“I think they chose Mount Airy because it is a beautiful location and the home of Andy Griffith. They can relax and step back in time. We are the perfect location to relax and celebrate Valentine’s Day,” explained Hester.
