MOUNT AIRY — Mr. Joseph Washington Callahan Sr., 72, of Mount Airy, passed away Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, at his home. Mr. Callahan was born in Surry County on Dec. 15, 1940, to Joe Bailey and Lucille Barnard Callahan. He served our country in the United States Air Force and was retired from Safe Light Auto Glass. Mr. Callahan was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be dearly missed by all his family and many friends. Surviving are his wife, Katie Gravley Callahan; daughters and a son-in-law, Sonya and Glen Ganyard of Pilot Mountain and Missy Castle of Biloxi, Miss.; a son and daughter-in-law, Joseph Callahan Jr. and wife Shayna of Winston-Salem; grandchildren, Kirsten Callahan, Gavin Callahan, Cory Shelton, Santana Hull and Freddy Huff; a sister, Hilda Jones of Dobson; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles and Suzanne Callahan of Pennsylvania, Ricky Callahan of Mississippi, Jim Callahan of Texas, Bill Callahan of West Virginia, Danny Callahan of Mississippi and Dennis and Lilly Callahan of Charlotte. In addition to his parents, Mr. Callahan was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Calvin Jones. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Barry Clement. Burial will follow in Jessup Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive friends Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
