CONCORD — The Greater Cabarrus Home Educators defeated the Surry Runnin’ Patriots girls basketball team by one point Friday, and the difference in the game came down to rebounds, according to Runnin’ Patriots Head Coach Todd Hill.

The score ended 52-51 in Cabarrus’ favor.

The Patriots’ record after Friday’s loss is 12-3, and Surry Runnin’ Patriots Head Coach Todd Hill said, “They beat us 17-12 on rebounds (on the glass) in the first half.”

Hill said the Patriots struggled with position during the first half and did not do well early on in keeping Cabarrus from getting to the inside. Cabarrus had a 9-3 run on the Patriots at one point in the game’s earlier moments but the team eventually settled down, Hill said.

By the end of the first quarter, each team had 15 points a piece, Hill said. The second quarter proved to be a problem for the Patriots because of foul trouble, he said. In the second quarter, Cabarrus outscored the Patriots by five points.

Cabarrus led at the half by a score of 30-25.

Patriots then outscored Cabarrus by two points in the third and fourth quarter but still came up one point short.

“When you are playing a physical team, you have to get position and push them out,” Hill said, adding that the team did much better later in the game.

In the second half, Hill said the Runnin’ Patriots and Cabarrus were 17-17 in rebounds. “I can live with that,” Hill said.

Hill said his team did exceptionally well in turnovers especially playing against a physical team like Cabarrus.

“We had seven turnovers only but still got out rebounded. The girls did a really good job handling the ball and I am happy with the turnover ratio of the team. Any high school team staying 10 (turnovers) and under is exceptional, and we are averaging 15 for the year,” Hill said.

The Runnin’ Patriots stats for Friday’s game in rebounds are: Sydney Bedsaul 8, and Kaylee Paris 6.

Joye Harrison had seven assists and only two turnovers, Hill said.

“We are always looking for a better than 2:1 assist-to-turnover ratio,” Hill said. “Harrison recorded a 3.3 to 1 ratio against Cabarrus and that was very good.”

The Patriots game scorers were: Sydney Bedsaul 13; Joye Harrison 12; Jessica Boyd 11; and Kaylee Paris, nine. Kelsey Cabe had four points, Camille Fishel had two, and Emily Marshall had one.

The Pats will play Sheets Memorial at home on Tuesday.
