An 18-year-old from Cana, Va., died Friday morning following a vehicle collision earlier in the day.
Jeremy Willard died about four hours after a crash in which his vehicle rear-ended a tractor-trailer on N.C. 89 in the Pine Ridge community of Mount Airy.
According to the report by Trooper A.D. Chambers of the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Jerry Sharpe, 41, of Woodlawn, Va., had just left the Mountain Lumber Company with a full tractor-trailer load of pallets headed west on 89, and he was traveling at a slow rate of speed. It appears Willard didn’t slow down enough to avoid the tractor-trailer and rearended it at about 60 mph, the report stated.
The incident occurred at about 5:55 a.m. Friday.
Crews from Pine Ridge Volunteer Fire Department, Mount Airy Rescue Squad and Surry County EMS responded to the scene, where Willard, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pinned in his vehicle and had to be extricated.
He was airlifted from a site near the wreck by AirCare and transported to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center around 6:30 a.m. He died at the hospital before 10:30 a.m.
Chambers reported Sharpe suffered no injuries and neither drivers were carrying passengers. No charges are expected in the accident.
