ELKIN — East Surry beat Elkin in wrestling for the second time in a week, topping the Elks 54-21 Wednesday.

The two teams met at South Stokes Saturday, with the Cards winning 49-30.

On Wednesday, the Cards didn’t give up a single forfeit, filling all 14 weight classes, while the Elks gave up four forfeits. That spotted East Surry 24 points.

In the 10 matches that were held, the Cards and Elks split 5-5, but East got all five wins by fall, while holding Elkin to minor decisions in three losses.

East Surry got its pins in five straight weights between 126 and 152.

Andrew Kozlow (126) pinned Levi Collins in the first period.

Sam Faries (132) pinned Jeremy Pierce with just a second left in the match.

Austin Jessup (138) dropped Seth Creed in just 24 seconds. The sophomore improved to 10-4.

Jimmy Speer (145) pinned Aldair Garcia in 2:19. He is now 17-4 on the season, including winning the 160-pound weight class in the Joe Via Invitational Tournament a month ago.

Keanu Love (152) has the team’s top winning percentage as he improved to 17-1 with a pin of Ethan McClean in 1:04. Love’s only loss was to Bryant Halsch, Southeast Guilford, an honorable mention for the state top 10 at the 4A level.

At 160, Travis Pugh was pinned by Zane Millsaps in the first period. Mitchell Flynt (182) was pinned in the first by Dylan Gentry, arguably Elkin’s best wrestler at 20-5.

While East lost at 120, 220 and heavyweight, none of those three wrestlers gave up a fall or even a major decision, saving the team nine possible points.

Austin Bryant (120) held Said Javier (16-9) to a 6-4 decision. Joshua Stevens (285) held Tyler Stolzfus to an 8-3 decision.

Jacob Chattin (220) held Walker Longworth to a 3-2 decision. Longworth bumped up a weight to avoid Cody Gaskell (12-2) at 195, who received one of the four forfeits.

Eddie Nunez (106), Timmy Norman (120) and Gage Edwards (170) received the other forfeits.

East Surry (9-6) travels to conference leader North Surry on Friday.

Gaskell’s only two losses of the season have come to North’s Levi Slate, so he will be eager for a chance at revenge. Another battle will be Love against North’s Austin Collins (31-2).
