KERNERSVILLE — East Surry got out to an early lead and held off the Villains’ rally for a 63-52 win on the road Friday night.

The Cardinals (8-4, 3-3 in the Northwest Conference) played a good first quarter and built a 12-point lead at the half, according to assistant coach David Johnson.

Bishop McGuinness (5-5, 2-3) made a run in the third quarter to cut the lead to six. However, near the end of the period, the Cards answered with a spurt of their own to enter the fourth quarter up by 13 points.

Power forward Tyler Pardue led the way with 20 points, and point guard Scott Meredith was next with 18.

Winston-Salem Prep and West Stokes are atop the Northwest standings with perfect conference records. North Stokes is winless and firmly entrenched in last place.

Then in the middle of the pack are six teams battling it out with just two or three losses each.

The Cards get a break from conference action when they host Elkin Wednesday.

Rather than charge a standard admission fee, East Surry is accepting food donations.

The fee is five cans of food that will go to Pilot Mountain Outreach Ministry to help needy families. The JV girls game kicks off the activities at 4 p.m.
