PILOT MOUNTAIN — East Surry and South Stokes split their swim meets Monday at the Armfield Civic Center.

The Lady Cardinals won the girls’ meet handily, while the Sauras won the boys’ side.

East Surry has fewer boys on its swim team, but they performed well in their events.

The Cards didn’t have anyone racing in five events, but did take three first-place finishes, two seconds and a third.

Christopher Holshouser provided two of the wins. He took first in the 100-meter freestyle by more than 10 seconds at 57.02. Teammate Caleb Mann was fourth as the next three swimmers had a photo finish for second place. Mann was only 0.4 seconds away from surpassing both Thomas Owens and Adam Moore.

In the 100m backstroke, Holshouser finished in 1:11.26, more than 16 seconds ahead of South’s Joey Swanson.

The 400m relay team took first place in another photo finish. East finished 0.2 seconds ahead of South Stokes.

The size difference between the teams was most obvious in the 200m freestyle relay as East took second place, while South Stokes had enough swimmers to take first, third and fourth.

Tanner Griffin had East’s other second place as he finished the 200m freestyle in 3:08.31.

South Stokes took the match 79-35.

On the girls’ side, East Surry won 109-35.

The girls took first place in 10 of 11 events and had eight second-place finishes.

The only event the Lady Sauras won was the 200m freestyle where Elizabeth Byers edged East’s Laken Tucker by less than a second.

In the 100m backstroke, Elizabeth Martin was first with Emma Kish second.

East’s Kelsey Tunstall took first in the 100m breaststroke.

Then in the 400m freestyle relay, East Surry took first and second for 12 team points.

In the 100m butterfly, Katherine Martin took first and Avery Tilley second.

In the 100m freestyle, Kayla Simmons was first, Kayla Seiffert second and Hailey Turpin fourth for 12 team points.

Abby Altrath was the only participant in the grueling 500m freestyle, finishing in 7:22.23.

In the 200m freestyle relay, East Surry finished first, second and fourth. However, the second-place team had a disqualification, giving South Stokes second place.

In the 200m medley relay, East Surry finished first and second with South Stokes 21 seconds behind in third.

After Byers gave the Sauras their lone win, Tunstall and Katelynn Custer finished one, two in the 200m individual medley.

In the 50m freestyle race, East finished first, second and fourth. Mikayla Elliott was the only swimmer to break 30 seconds, finishing in 29.85. Seiffert was second and Turpin fourth.

The Armfield Civic Center will host the Northwest Conference Championship this weekend. The boys will swim on Friday, then the girls on Saturday.
