PILOT MOUNTAIN — Try as they might, the East Surry softball team was just no match for Mother Nature Tuesday night.

A steady rain forced the Cardinals’ NCHSAA 1A third-round playoff game against visiting South Stanly to be called off in the fourth inning with no score. The game will be resumed tonight at 7 p.m.

“It was hard for pitchers to pitch and hard for hitters to hit,” East Surry coach Derrick Hill explained. “We stopped in the fourth because we didn’t think it was going to get any better.”

Jenna Pruitt had the only hit for East Surry. Hayley Shelton will resume her pitcher’s duel with the Rowdy Rebel Bulls’ Nikki Whitley.

East Surry coach Derrick Hill said the break will give him time to go over game plans with his girls. The Cardinals continually chased Whitley’s riseball, Hill said, in addition to resorting to other bad habits. He said the weather may have factored in and he is expecting more of his players today.

“It’s hard to do anything in that type of weather,” Hill said. “We’ve got to be ready to play (today).”
