Mount Airy co-captain Lindsay Castevens scored four goals to lead the Lady Bears over North Surry.
A year ago, Lindsay Castevens was yelling instructions from the sidelines, sporting a brace on her damaged knee.
On Thursday, the senior co-captain led Mount Airy to a 6-0 win over rival North Surry by scoring four goals.
She had a hat trick in the first half, noted Coach Will Hurley.
Castevens scored in the 19th, 33rd and 36th minutes. Two assists came from Vanessa Armenta, and the other came from Vanessa’s younger sister Kimberly Lachino, noted Hurley.
“Kimberly played an awesome game tonight,” he said.
Normally Castevens takes the free kicks, but the senior was getting a rest on the bench in the second half when the whistle blew. Hurley had defender Marissa Petri take the kick.
It was beautiful, he recalled. It was a picture-perfect kick into the corner.
The final goal came when Andi Moore converted a breakaway.
The Lady Greyhounds had some chances, but keeper Summer Hamilton made nine saves.
North’s keeper also deserves credit, Hurley noted. The Bears had 18 shots on goal, but Harley Gordon made several good stops.
Hurley also praised the work of Bear Hannah Hall. Hannah always wants to win, and she does a good job as a senior co-captain, he said.
This gives the Bears (6-9-1) a tie and two wins in their past three games.
“It feels good to be away from that ‘L’ for a while,” he said.
Mount Airy hosts West Stokes tonight, while North Surry hosts Surry Central.
