A recent wastewater spill in Mount Airy has been found to have caused no environmental damage, according to city officials.
Municipal personnel became aware of the spill on Nov. 15, which involved an estimated 5,080 gallons of untreated wastewater. It entered an unnamed tributary of the Ararat River, which is part of the Yadkin-Pee Dee River Basin.
The spill originated from a manhole near the railroad tracks off Galloway Street, which connects North Main Street and Riverside Drive.
City crews responded immediately to the site, assessed the damage and repaired the sewer line. The area was then inspected and determined to be free of any environmental damage.
State law requires entities with permitted wastewater collection systems such as the city of Mount Airy to report any spill of 1,000 or more gallons to both the public as well as a state agency that monitors such incidents.
The N.C. Division of Water Quality was notified of the spill the day after city personnel learned of it, and is reviewing the matter.
