An upcoming fundraiser offers not only the chance to “dance the night away” for a good cause, but adds the unique element of dancing “through the decades” to the sounds of classic dance hits from the 1930s and 1940s.
The event will be held Saturday from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the L.H. Jones Auditorium, located at 215 Jones School Road in Mount Airy. The fundraiser will benefit the Family Resource Center located at the old Jones School.
Annalisa Davis, director of the FRC, says that this is a chance for all ages to come out for a night of inexpensive fun. The idea was developed by Brack Llewellyn during a brainstorming session of possible fundraisers. Llewellyn is serving as the M.C. and D.J. for the dance.
“There will be a dance contest, door prizes, a 50/50 raffle, great music, and fun for everyone - this is for all ages,” says Davis. Prior registration is not required for participation in the dance contest.
There is no official dress code or requirement to dress in themed outfits, although anyone who wishes to wear a 1930s or 40s costume may do so.
Music for the dance will represent the sounds of the 1930s and 1940s, with hits from Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, Harry James, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and many more.
Members of The Nonesuch Playmakers will present special musical performances during the dance.
This general fundraising activity will benefit the Family Resource Center. Light refreshments will be served at no extra charge. Refreshment funds were donated to the FRC by Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care.
The Family Resource Center is operated by the non-profit organization YVEDDI (Yadkin Valley Economic Development District Inc.) and serves as a one-stop focal point for resources in the community, such as Head Start, Older Americans Act, Community Service Block Grant, Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Transportation (Medical and General), YVEDDI services, and the Surry County Senior Center. Other Community Services located in the center include Life Span Child Care, Mount Airy City Schools Pre-School Program, Mt. Airy City Schools youth / eLink Program, WIA Adult/Dislocated Workers Program, Yokefellow Ministries, J.J. Jones Alumni Group and The Arc of Surry County.
Tickets are $5 and are available prior to the dance and at the door. For advance tickets and more information, please see or call Annalisa Davis at the FRC - 786-6155, ext. 222.
