PILOT MOUNTAIN — Four students in the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) program at East Surry High School have been honored for exemplary performance after competing for Cadet of the Quarter honors at the school earlier this month.

According to Senior Army Instructor and retired Lt. Col. Richard Howe, cadets competing in the contest dressed in their uniforms on Oct. 10 to compete for the honor.

“A panel of judges, comprised of the East Surry JROTC staff, inspected each individual cadet and asked a series of questions,” Howe said. “After the questions, the cadets were asked to show their knowledge of drill.”

Cadets in the corps Cadets in Leadership Education Training program who were at level two and above demonstrated their drill technique while armed with mock rifles, while those in level one demonstrated without arms, Howe said.

“The cadets were graded on how well they answered questions, how well they performed drill and how well their uniforms met standards,” he noted.

Only cadets who maintained an “A” average in the JROTC program throughout the semester were allowed to compete.

Following the competition, the following winners of Cadet of the Quarter were announced:

• Level Four — Cadet Jonathan Riggs.

• Level Three — Cadet Samuel Faries.

• Level Two — Cadet Nicolas Yanez.

• Level One — Cadet Hali Morgan.

Each winning cadet was promoted in rank and received a medal.

All participating cadets received a ribbon for their uniforms.

Howe said each participating cadet should be congratulated.
