WILKESBORO — Surry Central soccer defeated Wilkes Central 2-0 in the season finale Thursday.

Adrian Gonzalez and Juan Lopez teamed up for a pair of goals, while their teammates helped dominate time of possession in the battle of the two Eagles teams.

The game was scoreless for the first 37 minutes, but Coach Blake Roth said his team controlled the ball most of the time.

“We dominated shot totals,” said Roth. Wilkes Central only earned maybe four or five on-goal tries, he said. The Golden Eagles had more than 20 attempts.

The forwards pressured Wilkes’ defense and drew a lot of corner kicks, the coach said. Unfortunately, the team didn’t convert any of those attempts.

The team played well, and this was a good preparation for the playoffs, he believed, going against a nonconference team on the road.

“They played hard and didn’t make it easy on us,” Roth said of Wilkes Central.

The first goal came in the 38th minute as Lopez lofted a ball up so that Gonzalez could head it into the net.

In the 27th minute of the second half, Gonzalez returned the favor, passing to Lopez for a score.

Surry Central (16-2-2) is the second seed for the Northwest Conference and has earned a playoff spot.

Roth said he wouldn’t know for sure until Monday, but it looks like the Golden Eagles could host Forest Hills on Tuesday or Wednesday in the first round of the 2A state brackets.
