If your pet is yet to be spayed or neutered because of the cost involved, one local organization is doing something to help this weekend.

Mayberry 4 Paws, a local non-profit dedicated to reducing the number of unwanted animals in the county, is joining forces with the Ryan Newman Foundation for a spay/neuter blitz this weekend.

The foundation provided the local group with a $5,000 grant to fund the program.

Founded by NASCAR driver Ryan Newman, the mission of the foundation is to educate and encourage people to spay/neuter their pets and to adopt dogs and cats from animal shelters and to educate children and adults about the importance of conservation.

Volunteers will be on site at the Cedar Ridge Trailer Park off Pipers Gap Road to work with owners of large breed dogs.

According to Mayberry 4 Paws organizer Jane Taylor, the reason volunteers chose that site is due to the large number of dogs being sent to the shelter from the area.

“Our volunteers will be going through the community speaking with people door-to-door to offer the service,” she said. “We just want to reduce the numbers of animals that are going to the shelter.”

The volunteers will offer interested residents free spaying/neutering for large breed dogs throughout the weekend.

Taylor said anyone interested simply needs to indicate their interest to take advantage of the program.

“They will need to bring $20 to receive the service, and when they pick up their animals after the procedure they will get that money back,” she said.
