Members of the Pilot Knob Volunteer Fire Department spray the road bed where a truck fire occurred Friday afternoon. The truck was traveling north on U.S. 52 North toward Mount Airy. According to Chief James DeHart, a cigarette tossed out of a Piedmont Utility Group truck from Shelby ignited a hay bale in the truck’s bed. No injuries were reported in connection with the incident. The call for the fire was received at 3:06 p.m. DeHart said damages to the vehicle appeared to be limited to some personal equipment in the back of the truck. Traffic was slowed temporarily as one lane was closed and the fire was extinguished.
