Staff Report

A strong inside game couldn’t make up for a lack of perimeter threat, causing Surry Central to lose to Wilkes Central, 63-42, in the first round of the Mountain Valley 2-A playoffs.

Wilkes Central led, 37-30, after three quarters before a 26-point outburst in the fourth doomed the hopes of the Golden Eagles.

“We got the lead down to 34-30 in the third,” Surry Central coach Ken Eiswald said. “Then we couldn’t find a guy to make shot.”

The Golden Eagles were 0-for-12 from 3-point range, offsetting a strong performance from the post players. Marvin Spicer had 12 points, followed by Austin McLamb and Jake Levesque, who scored 10 points apiece.

Kirk Mitchell was the catalyst for Wilkes Central. Spanning the third and early fourth, Mitchell hit a 3 and a few shirt jumpers that started his team’s terrific final quarter.

Surry Central (10-15) is waiting to hear if it will play in the state tournament as an at-large team.
