North Surry blanked West Stokes 78-0 in wrestling Tuesday night.
The Greyhounds (28-2) won 10 of the 12 matches by pin and accepted two forfeits, coming up just six points short of a perfect match.
West Stokes (6-11) has three wrestlers with very good records this season, but none could come through with a win.
Holden Sands was 17-4 coming in at 138 lbs., George Patrick 14-5 at 113 lbs. and Jacob Widner 15-8 at 132 lbs.
North’s Caleb Lowe battled Sands to a 4-0 decision win. Jacob Humphries pinned Patrick, and Austin Rozier pinned Widner.
It was 0-0 after the first period, said Coach Eric Jessup. Lowe started on bottom and was moving really well trying to get free. Sands was penalized three times for locking his hands to try to control Lowe.
The first two times were one-point penalties, then the third was a two-pointer, said Jessup. A fourth violation would have been a disqualification.
The two forfeits came at 106 to Jacob Hill and at 195 to Levi Slate.
At 120, Austin McMillian pinned Bryan Whittington. At 126, Tristen Brannock pinned Dalton McGee. At 145, Devyn Green pinned Nick Wall.
Austin McBride wrestled at 152 Tuesday and won a 7-4 decision over Josh Adkins. Austin Collins wrestled up at 160 and pinned Brett Whittington.
At 170, Dalton Golding pinned Derrick Drane. At 182, Corbin Bullins pinned Matthew Craver.
At 220, Cody Slate pinned Caleb Costner. And at heavyweight, Austin Akers earned a fall on Jacob Wagoner.
North Surry travels to Surry Central tonight. The match was set for Friday, but because of the threat of bad weather, the coaches decided to move the date up one day.
While this will be the regular conference meeting, the Hounds have defeated the Golden Eagles twice this season in tournaments by an average of 24 points.
In the state 2A coaches’ poll on Retro Rankings, North Surry is still second behind Croatan, which received 36 first-place votes and 432 total points. North had seven first-place votes and 308 points.
Piedmont is third with two firsts and 236 points. North Surry edged Piedmont by one point in a Dec. 5 tri-match.
