MOUNT AIRY — Mr. James Donald [Jim] Laster, 70, of Mount Airy, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home after being in declining health for sometime. He was born in Surry County on July 15, 1942, to the late Quillar and Thelma Swift Laster, was retired from R.J. Reynolds and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Among his many interests were bluegrass festivals, guitar picking sessions, golf, yard work, visits with friends and most of all spending time with his grandsons. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Glenda Stanley Laster of the home; a daughter, Jamie L. Smith of Mount Airy; grandsons, Stephen Smith and Neil Smith, both of Mount Airy; and many dear friends. In addition to his parents, Mr. Laster was preceded in death by a brother, Larry Laster; and several friends. Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Alex Martin with burial to follow at Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home. The family wishes to thank Dr. Barry Seltzer, Dr. Patricia Zekon and Dr. Daniel Murphy and the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice.
