The Mount Airy Varsity Girls won two of the three scrimmage matches played yesterday during the Jubilee Girls’ Invitational Basketball tournament held in Mount Airy at the Howard Finch gymnasium.
The Lady Bears won against Walkertown 72-24 and against Glenn High with a score of 70-52.
They lost to Ashe County 47-45 in a double-overtime game.
Bears Head Coach Howard Mayo said, “I think it was a good learning experience for the team. I saw improvement, and that was what I was looking for.”
Mayo said it also gave him a chance to scout out the girls performance before regular season play begins.
Ten schools from around the state competed in the tournament. They were: Mount Airy, East Surry, North Surry, Ashe County, Forbush, Glenn, Hiwassee Dam, Ledford, Walkertown and West Forsyth.
Mayo said he started the tournament two years ago to provide a way for the girls to improve in preseason play against non-conference opponents around the state and is impressed by the number of teams that have reached out to participate.
North Surry Coach Shane Slate was one of those who joined the jubilee this season. He used the scrimmages as a chance to get his younger players plenty of minutes. He said he hasn’t finalized the varsity roster yet and may tinker with the lineup for the next few weeks.
The Lady Hounds went to overtime with Ashe County, who won the game in the final seconds with a three-pointer. Then the Hounds beat Glenn 46-29 after a 15-0 spurt in the first half broke open a close game.
The team Hiwassee Dam drove more five hours just to play in the tournament, said Mayo.
Many coaches and parents have helped make the event a success, said Mayo.
“Parents helped take up money and ran the concession stand, and it was appreciated,” he said.
