The Lady Bears swept Surry Central 6-0 in tennis Thursday before rain drowned out doubles play.
Mount Airy took the top four matches in dominant fashion, then battled through a couple of tough matches at seeds five and six.
Top seed Jordan Jackson completed a perfect first set against Savannah Wilson. Jackson won every point of all six games to secure the “golden set.” She only lost a few points in the second set in winning 6-0, 6-0.
Davi Barbour, Jade Hughes and Bree Hughes won their matches by identical 6-0, 6-1 scores over Marlee Wilmoth, Megan Gillespie and Kennedy Dockery respectively.
Central’s Mikayla Cox led 3-2 in the first set before Mount Airy’s Carley Vanhoy rallied to win four of the next five games. Vanhoy finished with a 6-3, 6-1 win.
The sixth slot was the battle of the day as Abby Hagwood and Abby Samuels faced off. Mount Airy’s Hagwood took the first set 6-3, but Samuels quickly took the lead in the second set and never trailed in a 6-3 set of her own.
Doubles matches already had begun by the time Hagwood won the battle with a third-set tiebreaker.
Then showers descended on the court, canceling the doubles matches.
