East Surry’s Panayiota Boutis streaks ahead of the Bear defenders and sends in the second of her two goals.
PILOT MOUNTAIN — East Surry scored two early goals and stayed in control for a 6-0 win over Mount Airy Tuesday.
Maria Mares handed out four assists for the Lady Cardinals, and Beth Johnson pitched a shutout at keeper.
“We got great effort and attitude from every player,” said Coach John Sigmon. “They all should be proud because they all played great tonight.”
The Lady Bears began the season 6-0 before two losses last week. The Cards came out mentally prepared for a battle and jumped out to an early 2-0 lead.
The wind was blowing hard at the start, and then East got those two goals, and the Bears just seemed to be out of it mentally after that, said Mount Airy Coach Will Hurley.
Panayiota Boutis scored twice and assisted to Katelyn Custer on a corner kick. Custer also had two goals for the Cards.
Cristal Hicinbothem and Grace Snow rounded out the scoring for the home team.
On the defensive side, Sigmon pointed out the solid play of Sydney Sands.
At the start of the second half, Sigmon had Boutis rotate back to the defense to let some fresh legs attack up front.
The Bears controlled the ball for much of the half, but Boutis helped solidify the back line.
With the score 4-0 at halftime, the Bears stopped playing team ball, Hurley said. Some of the team’s better players felt like they had to get the squad going by scoring a goal, but they weren’t passing like they normally do, he said.
In the loss, Hurley said Anna Ortiz, Jessica Escutia and Christy Beasley gave plenty of effort and never quit.
Hurley congratulated East Surry on its effort and noted the way the players talked throughout.
“I heard them communicating a lot better than we did,” he said. The Bears needed to do a better job of talking — sometimes something as simple as saying “I got it” so teammates don’t collide, he said.
East Surry travels to Atkins on Thursday, while Mount Airy hosts Alleghany that day.
On Friday, East travels to Bishop, while the Bears go to Atkins.
