PILOT MOUNTAIN — East Surry girls varsity basketball team beat Ashe County by a score of 62-34 during its home opener Tuesday night.

Sydney Mosely, Emma Slater, Gabbi Jessup, Lauren Thompson and Keri Fulp were starters for Cardinals as the season opened.

In the first quarter of the ballgame, the Cardinals outscored the Huskies by a total of 18-4. At half-time, the score was 31-22.

Head Coach Keith Gunter said overall he was pleased with the Cards play Tuesday but had to make adjustments at half-time.

“We got careless and they were able to convert and went into halftime with the momentum,” Gunter said.

He said he asked the girls to readjust defensively at the half and they did.

“We made them get to the outside and did not allow them to drive into the basket,” the coach said.

The third quarter was scored with the Cards getting 22 points to the Huskies’ seven. “At that point we had game. The fourth quarter was 9-6 in points and we held the ball with the lead,” Gunter said.

The defense spoke volumes as a team effort in last night’s games with these numbers.

Gabbi Jessup led with four assists; and Keri Fulp, Laken Bowman and Lauren Thompson each had three assists. Keri Fulp had 13 rebounds. Sydney Marion had six rebounds.

Offensively, the Cardinals’ scorers were: Emma Slater with two points; Gabbi Jessup, four points; Sydney Moseley with 13 points; Lauren Thompson, two points; Sydney Marion , eight points; Laken Bowman, five points; and Kacie Markle with five points.

The leading Card scorer was Keri Fulp, and she scored 21 points.

The girls will play in the Mount Airy High’s holiday tournament Friday and Saturday.
