TRINITY — The Lady Eagles defeated the Page Pirates at the Domino’s Headliners Team Challenge last Saturday, 57-50.
At Wheatmore High School, the competition featured 20 of the state’s best high school female basketball teams. Other local teams included Bishop McGuinness and Wilkes Central.
During the first quarter, Surry Central went 17-14 against Page. The scores grew closer in the second quarter as the Eagles reached 32 points versus the Pirates’ 30.
In the third quarter, however, Central gained a 10-point lead with 48 compared to Page’s 38. They continued that momentum in the final quarter with 57 opposite their rival’s 50.
Among the Eagles, Cassidy Joyner scored 21 points, while Courtney Hegler had 13 points and nine assists.
Sarah Bruce earned eight points. She was also the leading rebounder, with five.
“Sarah really did a good job playing defense the entire game,” said Coach Mandy Holt.
Due to Bruce’s performance, Page’s best inside girl had limited opportunities to score. “She only had, I think, four points for the whole game,” added Holt.
Brittany Lewis delivered six points. Maddie White had three points and three steals.
Tori Blevins, Marlee Wilmoth and Brooke Lewis each scored two points. Tess Dockery offered seven steals.
“This was a really good team effort, as far as defense goes,” concluded Holt. “I think we all played really well.”
The Lady Eagles will next compete at Winston-Salem Prep on Tuesday.
