DOBSON — South Stokes handed the Lady Eagles a 6-3 loss in softball on Tuesday.

Pitcher Elise Austin settled down for a good outing after the first inning, but the Eagles never overcame the four runs the Lady Sauras posted in that first frame.

“We just never recovered from that point,” said Coach Glenn Craddock.

Surry Central was scoreless in the first five innings. By the time the Eagles came up to bat in the bottom of the sixth, the score was 6-0.

“We just couldn’t put the hits together,” Craddock said.

In that first inning, the Sauras got a leadoff single. Then after a strikeout, South Stokes had three straight hits to put three runs across. Then a fielder’s choice with a runner on third got the fourth run home.

After that, Austin shut the Sauras down for four innings before giving up two runs in the sixth.

In the bottom of the sixth, catcher Ivey Johnson, who earlier hit a double, smacked a leadoff triple. Cassidy Joyner brought her home with a sacrifice fly.

Down 6-1 in the seventh, the Eagles got a one-out double by Tiffani York. Brittany Myers drove her in with a base hit. Then Karie McLamb doubled Myers home.

The Eagles outhit the Sauras 10 to nine, led by Johnson’s two extra-base hits and Myers going 3-4. York also went 2-4 with a single and double.

Craddock said the team needs to get back to the basics, but he wouldn’t have time to practice with them because they had another game on Wednesday with Starmount. Results of that game were not available at press time.

On Friday, the Eagles travel to Mount Airy.
