The Bears’ Charli Hiatt dives to reach a fast serve in Thursday’s match with the Lady Eagles.
The Lady Eagles won their fifth-straight volleyball match, topping the Lady Bears 3-1 Thursday.
Surry Central and Mount Airy battled evenly throughout the afternoon, but a couple of key runs propelled the Eagles to victory.
In the first set, the Bears jumped ahead 8-3.
That seemed to wake the Eagles up, and they went a 19-1 run for a commanding 22-9 lead. They took the first set 25-11.
Mount Airy again went ahead in the early stages, taking an 8-5 lead in the second set. The Bears were up 12-10 when they put some distance between the teams with an 8-1 run of their own.
Surry Central hung tough but couldn’t get the margin under five points before the Bears won 25-19.
In the third set, the Eagles went up 10-5, prompting a Bear timeout. Mount Airy closed to 12-11, but the Eagles never gave up the lead in a 25-19 win to lead 2-1 for the match.
The Bears led 8-5 in the fourth game when Central ran off four straight points. The Bears called timeout, but the run grew to nine straight points for a 14-8 lead.
At 19-13, the Bears put together a rally of their own, tying the game at 20-all. The game was tied at 22 before Central took the final three points for the win.
Of those deciding runs, Central Coach Carrie Hutchens said, “That’s us doing what we do best.” When the girls come together and play like a team, the score shows it, she said.
Emotions can be good when they fire a team up, but Hutchens said her squad also had times when they got down on themselves for a few mistakes.
Hopefully, that’s a lesson well-learned, she said, and the team won’t let their emotions get the better of them next time.
At times, the passing and setting weren’t there, and that kept the number of kills from being as high as Hutchens would like.
Cassidy Joyner led the Eagles with eight kills, Courtney Hegler seven kills and Brittany Lewis six.
Lewis also had two stuff blocks and went 14-15 serving with six aces.
Kaitlin Kidd went 20/20 at the line and also had two stuff blocks.
Kendra Johnson led the Eagles with 12 digs, while Hegler and Joyner had 11 each.
On Monday, the Eagles travel to Winston-Salem Prep, while the Bears next play Tuesday at South Stokes.
