North Surry, Surry Central and West Stokes will face off in the Northwest 2A Conference Tournament in tennis today and tomorrow.

Six singles players and six doubles teams will play the opening rounds and semifinals today at Mount Airy Middle School.

Then on Wednesday, the 2A teams will play alongside the 1A teams at Mount Airy High School for the finals and the third-place matches.

The past two years, the 2A teams have played all their matches in one day, but that has led to some weary legs as girls took the court as many as three times.

Last year, the Lady Eagles put on a strong showing, getting all six players to qualify for the regional tournament.

Five of those six players are back this year, as well as Megan Gillespie who missed the tournament with a torn ACL.

Savannah Wilson finished third as a sophomore and second as a junior, but she won’t be in singles play this time. She is teaming with Gillespie, a fellow senior, in the doubles bracket.

Coach Dennis Miller said he switched up doubles teams fairly often, but Wilson and Gillespie did play nine matches together.

They will be joined by teammates Kennedy Dockery and Mikayla Cox who finished second in doubles a year ago.

Abby Samuels won the doubles title last year with partner Hunter Marion. With Marion gone to graduation, Samuels will try her hand at singles instead.

Abby was 12-3 overall as the sixth seed, including a perfect 4-0 against the Lady Greyhounds and Wildcats, noted Miller.

North Surry has two returning singles players who have a good chance to advance to the regional level.

Junior Sarah Glasco won the singles title as a sophomore and is the top seed again this year. Teammate Harriette Blackburn finished fourth a year ago and is the third seed this time.

Glasco gets a first-round bye, as does second-seed Leah Shelton, West Stokes.

Blackburn faces Samuels in the three/six matchup, with the winner playing Shelton.

Central’s Marlee Wilmoth finished third last year and is the fourth seed today. She takes on West Stokes’ Abbey Emerson for the right to face Glasco in the semifinals.

On the doubles side, West Stokes gets the top seed and a first-round bye for McKayla Newsome and Abbey Westmoreland.

Wilson and Gillespie are the second seeds and also get a bye.

Central’s Dockery and Cox could have been the third seeds, but that would have put them playing their teammates in the semifinals.

Instead, Dockery and Cox are seeded fourth and face North Surry’s Lakin East and Jazzmyn Pugh for the right to face Newsome/Westmoreland.

Getting the third seed are North’s Chainey Kuykendall and Chantel Davis against West Stokes’ Mariah Maynard and Erin Kye. The winner faces Wilson and Gillespie in the semifinals.

The top three from singles and doubles will advance to the 2A regional tournament on Oct. 19 in Salisbury. Catawba College will host the matches.
